Why the Thunder’s Half-Court Offense Is Breaking Every Defensive Model We Run

Every October we re-fit our defensive suppression model on three seasons of possession data, and every October it tells us roughly the same story: elite defenses can drag opponent half-court efficiency down to about 0.92 points per possession. This year, one offense refuses to cooperate with that ceiling.

Across 1,842 simulated matchups, no defensive scheme in our database held Oklahoma City below 1.18 points per half-court trip. The league average is 0.98.

We ran ten thousand possessions against each of six archetypal schemes: drop, hedge, switch-everything, ice, zone, and scram-switch hybrids. Switching held the rim frequency down as expected — and gave back everything at the arc.

The honest caveat lives in the residuals: our model underweights offensive rebounding chains. Fold that in manually and the edge narrows — from historic to merely excellent.
