Who is Steve in Minecraft?
Steve is the default look of the character you control in every game mode. Promo material and reviewers treat him as the franchise mascot, but the game itself never tells his story.
In a July 2012 blog post, Persson wrote that the model was meant to be a genderless human. That choice is why Steve works as a blank slate for any player.

Yes. Steve joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch as a DLC fighter on October 13, 2020. Alex, Zombie and Enderman came as alternate costumes, and Nintendo confirmed the date in its October 3, 2020 presentation.
In battle, Steve mines blocks and uses a crafting table to make stronger weapons. Kotaku reported on March 3, 2023 that several tournaments banned him after a technique called the “Phantom MLG” surfaced. Rules change, so check your organizer’s current ruleset.

Jack Black plays Steve in A Minecraft Movie, which opened in US theaters on April 4, 2025. In the film, Steve is an expert crafter who guides four misfits through the Overworld. IGN reported in March 2025 that Black was first going to play a talking pig.
