Here’s how to get honeycomb in Minecraft: use shears on a bee nest or beehive at honey level 5, and it drops 3 honeycombs. Put a lit campfire under the nest first, or the bees will swarm you.
Honeycomb is a crafting item that arrived with the Buzzy Bees update (Java Edition 1.15) in December 2019. According to the Minecraft Wiki, it makes beehives, candles and honeycomb blocks, and it waxes copper.
No bee nest nearby? Trial Chambers chests also hold honeycomb. This guide applies to Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, both released September 15, 2026, on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and mobile. Info was checked in October 2026.
Fastest ways to get honeycomb in Minecraft
Shear a full bee nest with a campfire underneath it. Without a nest, loot a Trial Chambers chest or use Creative mode or the /give command.
| Method | What you need | Best for | Works in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shear a bee nest | Shears, campfire, nest at honey level 5 | Normal survival | Java, Bedrock |
| Dispenser harvest | Dispenser, shears, redstone signal | Farms, zero stings | Java, Bedrock |
| Trial Chambers chests | A Trial Chambers structure | No bees nearby | Java, Bedrock |
| Creative menu or /give | Creative mode or cheats on | Building and testing | Java, Bedrock |
How to get honeycomb in Minecraft, step by step
This is the standard survival method, and it works on every platform.
- Craft shears by placing two iron ingots diagonally in the crafting grid.
- Find a bee nest on an oak, birch or cherry tree. The biome table below shows where to look.
- Check the honey level. A nest at level 5 changes texture and shows honey dripping from its front.
- Place a lit campfire within 5 blocks below the nest, with nothing blocking the smoke.
- Stand to the east or west side. Natural nests face south, and bees leave through the front.
- Use the shears on the nest: right-click on Java PC, R2 on PlayStation, RT on Xbox, ZR on Switch, or tap on mobile.
- Collect the 3 honeycombs that pop out. The nest resets to honey level 0 and refills on its own.
Where to find a bee nest
A Meadow is the most reliable spot, since every eligible tree there spawns with a bee nest. Natural nests hold 2 to 3 bees and face south, per the Minecraft Wiki.
| Biome | Java Edition (per tree) | Bedrock Edition (per tree) |
|---|---|---|
| Meadow | 100% | 100% |
| Plains, Sunflower Plains, Cherry Grove | 5% | 5% |
| Flower Forest | 2% | 3% |
| Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest | 0.2% | 0.035% |
The chart uses a log scale because Meadow odds are hundreds of times higher than forest odds. Skip forests unless you’re already standing in one.
How to grow your own bee nest
Plant an oak, birch or cherry sapling within 2 blocks of a flower on the same level, with diagonals counting. The grown tree has a 5% chance to carry a nest with 2 to 3 bees, according to the Minecraft Wiki. Bone meal speeds up the attempts.
How to move a bee nest to your base
Break the nest with a Silk Touch tool at night or in the rain, when the bees are inside. The nest drops with the bees still in it, and they stay calm. Place it near flowers at your base, or lure bees to a crafted beehive by holding a flower.
How to get honeycomb without angering bees
Minecraft borrows this trick from real beekeeping, where a smoker is used to calm honey bees, according to Wikipedia. In the game, a campfire or soul campfire works if it sits within 5 blocks below the nest and its smoke reaches the hive.
Smoke can pass through one solid block placed directly above the campfire.
Campfire method on Java Edition
Sink the campfire into the ground below the nest and lay a carpet on top. The smoke still calms the bees, and the carpet keeps you and the bees out of the flames.
Campfire method on Bedrock Edition
On Bedrock, a carpet blocks the smoke, so the Java trick fails. Put the campfire in a hole 4 to 5 blocks below the nest, or fence the hole so animals don’t walk in.
Dispenser method
Point a dispenser at the nest, load it with shears and power it with redstone. The bees can’t tell who triggered it, so they don’t target you. Each use costs the shears 1 durability, and on Java a hopper under the hive can catch the drops.
What happens if a bee stings you?
A sting poisons you, and the bee that stung you dies about a minute later. A honey bottle cures poison. Poison alone can’t kill you, but sting damage can, so keep your hunger bar full.
Never break a nest by hand. Without Silk Touch, it drops nothing and every bee inside attacks.
How to get honeycomb without bees
Trial Chambers chests can hold honeycomb. The Minecraft Wiki lists only two natural sources: shearing hives and Trial Chambers loot.
| Chest | Amount | Chance (calculated by the wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance chest | 2 to 8 | About 55% per chest |
| Corridor chest | 2 to 8 | About 10% per chest |
Trial Chambers sit underground and are guarded by trial spawners, so bring armor and food.
In Creative mode, search the inventory for honeycomb. With cheats on, type /give @s honeycomb 3 on Java or /give @s honeycomb 3 0 on Bedrock.
Why your bee nest isn’t filling with honey
Check these causes in order, starting with the most common.
- It’s night or raining. Bees stay in the hive and stop working.
- No flowers are nearby. Bees must pollinate before the honey level rises, and any flower works.
- The front is blocked. Bees exit only through the front, and only if no solid block covers it.
- The bees are gone. A hive holds up to 3 bees, and bees that sting die.
- You’re checking too early. Each pollinated bee spends about 2 minutes inside, and the level rises by 1 per trip.
- You want faster honey. Bees in the Nether or the End leave the hive as soon as nectar turns into honey, with no day or weather limits.
What you can make with honeycomb in Minecraft
| Item | Recipe or use | Why you’d want it |
|---|---|---|
| Beehive | 6 planks (any type) + 3 honeycomb | A crafted nest you can place anywhere |
| Honeycomb Block | 4 honeycomb in a 2×2 square | Decorative building block |
| Candle | 1 string + 1 honeycomb | A dyeable light source |
| Waxed copper | Use honeycomb on a copper block | Stops oxidation |
| Waxed sign | Use honeycomb on a sign or hanging sign | Stops anyone editing the text |
Honeycomb stacks to 64 and isn’t food. Honey bottles are the food item.
Honeycomb myths in other Minecraft guides
- “You get 1 to 3 honeycombs.” A full hive drops 3.
- “Shear the campfire.” You shear the nest or hive; the campfire only supplies smoke.
- “Natural nests need flowers nearby.” The flower rule applies only to trees you grow.
- “A carpet never works.” It works on Java and blocks the smoke on Bedrock.
- “Java and Bedrock differ only in nest spawn rates.” Carpet and dispenser behavior differ too.
Mojang still ships free updates to these systems several times a year. Microsoft has owned Mojang since it agreed to pay $2.5 billion for the studio in 2014, as reported by Bloomberg.
FAQ
How many honeycombs does a beehive give?
A full beehive or bee nest drops 3 honeycombs per harvest. A dispenser loaded with shears also collects 3.
Can you get honeycomb in Minecraft without bees?
Yes. Trial Chambers entrance and corridor chests can hold 2 to 8 honeycombs. Creative mode and the /give command also work.
Is getting honeycomb different on Bedrock?
Mostly no. The honey level 5 rule and the 3-honeycomb drop match Java. On Bedrock, a carpet over the campfire blocks the calming smoke.
Can you eat honeycomb in Minecraft?
No. Honeycomb is a crafting and waxing material. Honey bottles are the food item, and they also cure poison.
How long does a bee nest take to fill with honey?
There’s no fixed timer. The honey level rises by 1 each time a pollinated bee finishes working, and bees work only in clear daytime. A full hive needs at least 5 trips.
