Minecraft flowers are decorative plants that grow on grass and dirt. You can turn them into dye and suspicious stew, and you can feed them to bees and some animals.
Java Edition 26.3 has 22 flowers: 17 small ones and 5 tall ones, according to the Minecraft Wiki. Most grow in plains, forests, Flower Forests and meadows, and bone meal on a grass block is the fastest way to get more.
Four flowers never spawn in the world: the Wither Rose, Torchflower, Pitcher Plant and Golden Dandelion. This guide covers Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50 (Wilderness Bound, September 15, 2026) on PC, console and mobile. Flower mechanics were checked against the Minecraft Wiki in October 2026.
How many flowers are in Minecraft?
Java Edition 26.3 has 22 flowers: 17 small and 5 tall. The wiki counts each tulip color and both Eyeblossom states separately.
Small flowers are one block tall and fit in flower pots. Tall flowers are two blocks high and don’t.
Older guides list 14 flowers. That count predates Eyeblossoms, the Golden Dandelion, and the two Sniffer plants (Torchflower and Pitcher Plant). The wiki also tags nine flower-like blocks, such as Cherry Leaves and Cactus Flower, that count as flowers for bees.
All Minecraft flowers and where to find them
Blue Orchids grow only in swamps, and Eyeblossoms grow only in the Pale Garden. This table shows Java Edition 26.3 generation.
| Flower | Size | Where it grows (Java 26.3) | Dye |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dandelion | Small | Plains, forests, birch forests, Flower Forests, meadows and most grassy biomes except swamps | Yellow |
| Poppy | Small | Same biomes as the Dandelion | Red |
| Blue Orchid | Small | Swamps only | Light Blue |
| Allium | Small | Flower Forests and meadows | Magenta |
| Azure Bluet | Small | Plains, Flower Forests and meadows | Light Gray |
| Tulips (red, orange, pink, white) | Small | Rare patches in plains, Flower Forests, and Flower Forest abandoned camps | Matching color (white gives Light Gray) |
| Oxeye Daisy | Small | Plains, Flower Forests and meadows | Light Gray |
| Cornflower | Small | Plains, Flower Forests and meadows | Blue |
| Lily of the Valley | Small | Flower Forests, forests, dark forests and birch forests | White |
| Closed Eyeblossom | Small | Pale Garden (daytime form) | Gray |
| Open Eyeblossom | Small | Pale Garden (nighttime form) | Orange |
| Torchflower | Small | Doesn’t spawn. Grown from Sniffer seeds. | Orange |
| Wither Rose | Small | Doesn’t spawn. Appears when the Wither kills a mob. | Black |
| Golden Dandelion | Small | Doesn’t spawn. Crafted from a Dandelion and Gold Nuggets. | Yellow |
| Sunflower | Tall | Sunflower Plains | Yellow |
| Lilac | Tall | Forests, Flower Forests, birch forests and dark forests | Magenta |
| Rose Bush | Tall | Same biomes as Lilac | Red |
| Peony | Tall | Same biomes as Lilac | Pink |
| Pitcher Plant | Tall | Doesn’t spawn. Grown from Sniffer pods. | Cyan |
Dandelions and poppies are twice as common in jungles and savannas, per the Minecraft Wiki, so those biomes are good for stocking up. Sunflower heads always face east, which gives you a rough compass when you’re lost.
Rare Minecraft flowers that never spawn
The Torchflower, Pitcher Plant, Wither Rose and Golden Dandelion each need their own method.
- Torchflower: let a Sniffer dig up Torchflower Seeds, plant them on farmland and wait through three growth stages. Despite the name, it gives off no light.
- Pitcher Plant: a Sniffer digs up Pitcher Pods, which you plant on farmland. Bone meal can’t copy a grown Pitcher Plant.
- Wither Rose: it appears where a mob dies to the Wither boss. Touching one gives you the Wither effect. You can plant it on netherrack or soul sand.
- Golden Dandelion: a crafted item, covered in the next section.
How to make a Golden Dandelion
Place a Dandelion in the center of a crafting grid and surround it with eight Gold Nuggets. The Golden Dandelion arrived in Java Edition 26.1 (Tiny Takeover, March 2026) and Bedrock 26.10, and it stops baby mobs from growing up.
- Get eight Gold Nuggets. One Gold Ingot crafts into nine.
- Pick a Dandelion from any grassy biome other than a swamp.
- Put the Dandelion in the center slot of a crafting table and a nugget in each of the other eight.
- Use the Golden Dandelion on a baby mob. Green particles show its aging has stopped.
- Use a second Golden Dandelion on the same mob to let it grow up later.
It doesn’t work on hostile baby mobs or baby villagers, according to the Minecraft Wiki. It also crafts into yellow dye and a Saturation suspicious stew.
Minecraft flowers and the dyes they make
Pink and yellow have the most flower sources, with four each. Lilac, Peony and Rose Bush give two dye per flower.
| Dye | Flowers that make it |
|---|---|
| Black | Wither Rose |
| Blue | Cornflower |
| Cyan | Pitcher Plant |
| Gray | Closed Eyeblossom |
| Light Blue | Blue Orchid |
| Light Gray | Azure Bluet, Oxeye Daisy, White Tulip |
| Magenta | Allium, Lilac |
| Orange | Orange Tulip, Torchflower, Open Eyeblossom |
| Pink | Pink Tulip, Peony, Cactus Flower, Pink Petals |
| Red | Poppy, Red Tulip, Rose Bush |
| White | Lily of the Valley |
| Yellow | Dandelion, Golden Dandelion, Sunflower, Wildflowers |
No flower makes brown, green or purple dye, based on the wiki’s crafting list.
Suspicious stew effects from each flower
Each small flower gives suspicious stew one status effect. Craft the stew from the mushroom stew ingredients plus one small flower.
| Effect | Flowers |
|---|---|
| Fire Resistance | Allium |
| Blindness | Azure Bluet, Open Eyeblossom |
| Jump Boost | Cornflower |
| Nausea | Closed Eyeblossom |
| Night Vision | Poppy, Torchflower |
| Poison | Lily of the Valley |
| Regeneration | Oxeye Daisy |
| Saturation | Blue Orchid, Dandelion, Golden Dandelion |
| Weakness | Any tulip |
| Wither | Wither Rose |
Tall flowers don’t work in stew. Effect durations differ between Java and Bedrock, so test a stew somewhere safe before you rely on it in a fight.
How to grow more Minecraft flowers with bone meal
Use bone meal on a grass block. Flowers appear on nearby grass, and the biome decides which ones can show up.
- Go to the biome that grows the flower you want. A Flower Forest gives the widest mix.
- Stand next to grass blocks, since bone meal on plain dirt won’t grow flowers.
- Use bone meal on a grass block.
- Break the flowers by hand or with any item. They drop at once.
- Bone meal the same patch again for another batch.
Bone meal on grass can’t produce Wither Roses, Torchflowers or any tall flower. Bone meal on a tall flower itself drops a copy, which works for every tall flower except the Pitcher Plant.
Java and Bedrock bone meal differences
| Mechanic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Bone meal area on grass | 15 x 5 x 15 blocks | 7 x 5 x 7 blocks |
| Bone meal in meadows | Follows meadow flower gradients | Grows only dandelions |
| Bone meal on a small flower | Doesn’t spread it | Spreads copies up to 3 blocks away (not Wither Rose, Torchflower or Golden Dandelion) |
| Lily of the Valley in forests | Spawns but can’t be regrown with bone meal | Can be regrown with bone meal |
In Java, flower gradients shift with height, so the same X and Z spot can grow a different flower at a different Y level. For tulips, bone meal a Flower Forest, since plains grow them only in rare patches.
Other ways to get flowers
- Wandering Traders may sell most small flowers for one emerald each, but not Wither Roses, Torchflowers, Closed Eyeblossoms or tall flowers.
- Iron Golems drop 0 to 2 poppies when they die.
- Endermen pick up small flowers and drop them when killed.
- Plains villages have oxeye daisies, cornflowers and azure bluets, and woodland mansions contain potted flowers.
What Minecraft flowers do for bees and animals
Bees collect nectar from most flowers to make honey, and feeding a flower to two adult bees makes them breed. Dandelions also breed rabbits.
Cactus Flowers attract bees too, but the cactus underneath can prick them to death. Place the flower on a different block.
Flower-like blocks that count as flowers
Nine more blocks sit in Java Edition’s flowers block tag, which is why bees treat them like flowers. Only some make dye.
| Block | Where it grows | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Cactus Flower | On cacti in deserts and badlands | Pink dye; can’t go in a flower pot |
| Pink Petals | Cherry Grove | Pink dye |
| Wildflowers | Birch forests, old growth birch forests, meadows | Yellow dye |
| Cherry Leaves | Cherry Grove | Decoration |
| Flowering Azalea | Lush Caves and azalea trees | Decoration |
| Flowering Azalea Leaves | Azalea trees | Decoration |
| Spore Blossom | Lush Cave ceilings | Decoration; hangs from the underside of a block |
| Chorus Flower | Chorus plants in the End | Plant on End Stone to grow chorus plants |
| Mangrove Propagule | Mangrove Swamps | Sapling for mangrove trees |
Cactus Flowers and Wildflowers arrived in Java 1.21.5 (Spring to Life).
Can you put Minecraft flowers in flower pots?
Small flowers fit in a flower pot. Tall flowers and Cactus Flowers don’t.
Most flowers can be planted on grass blocks, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, farmland, podzol, mycelium, moss, pale moss, mud and muddy mangrove roots. Wither Roses also go on netherrack and soul sand, plus soul soil in Java.
Common Minecraft flower myths
Several popular guides repeat the same mistakes. Here is how they compare with the Minecraft Wiki.

| Lily of the Valley only grows in Flower Forests. | Java also spawns it in forests, dark forests and birch forests. |
| You need shears to harvest flowers. | Any item or your bare hand breaks a flower at once. |
Recent Minecraft flower changes
Mojang now adds features through several free game drops a year, and Microsoft has owned the game since paying $2.5 billion for Mojang in 2014, as reported by Bloomberg. Recent drops added flowers in several places.
| Version | Flower change |
